Just a bit of fun experimenting with different brushes and colours. But yeah – this is a locust soldier from the popular videogame series Gears of War. This is to mark the first of a series of works one theme of videogames. Hopefully the next one will be a touch more elegant than the rather sketchy style here!

It’s the character from my last entry, only now he’s hopped off his horsey and is hanging around a campfire at night. Or standing amongst the wreckage of a devastated burning village. Your choice.

Inspiration drawn from a chat with the Mrs about light in images, and how Caravaggio used realistic lighting to achieve a greater sense of place and drama. Er, not that I’d compare my work to Caravaggio’s, obviously.

Maybe 5-6 hours work, graphics tablet, photoshop and custom brushes.

Inspired by Heavy Metal album covers of the 80’s. The character is original, but his design is based on alot of influences ranging from Simon Bisley’s ‘ABC Warriors’ artwork through to the Guyver anime series and Metal Gear series of videogames.

…It doesn’t get much more metal than that.

Process was approx 7 hours. Digital painting with custom brush set in Photoshop with graphics tablet.

My first submission to the new Milk & Sugar project, title ‘Sleep’.

Milk & Sugar was (and is!) an art project for people of all creative disciplines to get involved with. Every two weeks, we shout out a title, and you create a piece of work based on that title – it really is that simple. What started on facebook has now emigrated over to a new home, with better facilities for showing images, as well as writing, music, movies, and anything else you can think of!

So…things have been a bit quiet lately, no?

Well, that’s because M&S has moved virtual home into shared accommodation with the very lovely Do It Yourself Word Of Mouth Promotions – better known as DIY WOMP!

What does this mean? Well, I’ll tells ya:

There’s greater focus on getting your work seen. The site is already home to practicing artists, musicians, writers and photographers who work with DIY WOMP getting their work out there in front of people. We aim to be getting your efforts out there into the real world too, not just up on the web.

Ahoy, I really must get used to updating this thing. I’ve been super busy of late, gaining commissions and extra work all over the place, so if you want something done now is the time to get your order in! Ahoy! Since getting my groove back with my new Tom Dean image, i’ve resurrected another old sketch to to turn into a fully fledged digital painting. Remember my sketch of The Faun form Pan’s labyrinth a while back? Well, here’s a quick work in progress image of the reworked piece.

Shouldn’t take too much longer to finish him – but he does need a nice background.

Topic six: ‘Purge’

Inspired by a recent bout of sickness, I created this monstrosity. The piece is about how a person can become inhuman through a pursuit of beauty.
The creature is male, but is androgynous in the sense that he swathes himself in music and burlesque feathers. The clock in his face represents ageing. The pauldrons, one armoured, one feathered are indicative of a transformation. Half the body in darkness, lurching toward to the light. Clawing at future that is always two steps ahead.
